OverviewA follow-up to groundbreaking conferences held in the Netherlands and the United States, the Third International Nitrogen Conference brought experts together to explore ways for countries to create a balanced and flexible strategy to increase food and energy production while decreasing the detrimental effects on the environment.
Held in Nanjing, China, October 12-16, 2004, under the auspices of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the conference brought together researchers from such diverse disciplines as agronomy, ecology, biogeochemistry, oceanography, and atmospheric science as well as other sciences dealing with agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fishery, and energy production.
Among the goals of the conference: - Exchange and integrate scientific knowledge on sources, fates, and consequences of nitrogen at different scales, particularly in Asia
- Stimulate discussion between scientists and policymakers and explore a balanced strategy to increase food and energy production while protecting environmental quality and natural resources for future generations
- Suggest an action plan to increase food and energy production while decreasing detrimental effects of reactive nitrogen on the environment and to propose a Nanjing Declaration for Nitrogen Management
