Maps

Human alteration of the nitrogen cycle, its component fluxes and the resultant consequences vary significantly depending where you are in the world.

To illustrate the degree of alteration and the regional heterogeneity this section of the INI website contains maps relevant to critical components of the N cycle. The following set of maps illustrates both the temporal and spatial variability of the atmospheric deposition of nitrogen:

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition: 1860

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition: 1993

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition: 2050

The maps were produced by Frank Dentener and will be published in an upcoming issue of Biogeochemistry (Galloway JN, FJ Dentener, DG Capone, EW Boyer, RW Howarth, SP Seitzinger, GP Asner, C Cleveland, P Green, E Holland, DM Karl, AF Michaels, JH Porter, A Townsend and C Vörösmarty. Nitrogen Cycles: Past, Present and Future).
