Nitrogen Visualisation

The aim of the animation is to provide an integral overview of the sources and effects of reactive nitrogen compounds and the relationships between them. The animation also demonstrates the development of these sources and relationships with time.

Instructions

The animation is available as a zipped file, which can be downloaded to your computer and then extracted in a separate folder. Double-click the executable and enjoy.

One of the most important aspects of reactive nitrogen is the active part that it plays in ensuring global food supplies. Based on a rough calculation, 40% of the world’s population could not be sufficiently fed if it were not for chemical fertilizers. Even now, with the current chemical fertilizer consumption millions of people are suffering from malnutrition. In this animation, however, we have chosen to focus on areas confronted with excesses of reactive nitrogen.

The visualization consists of three parts:

  1. The animation of the development of nitrogen sources
  2. The animation of the effects
  3. The cockpit where you can see what the consequences are of certain policy choices

The cockpit aims to give an overview of the expected development in nitrogen emissions between 2005 and 2030. For these prognoses we have combined results from the most recent research with expert judgment. The cockpit also demonstrates the effects of policy choices on nitrogen emissions and other variables. Here too we have based ourselves on the most recent scientific insights.

Through this animation, we hope to stimulate and facilitate a broader discussion around the important issues regarding nitrogen. For this reason, the excel file that forms the basis for the calculations in the cockpit has been made available to you via this link . Please Contact us if you have any questions or comments.

We invite you to adapt the formulas according to your own insights in order to feed the discussion. When publishing your own version we ask you to refer to this version (Nitrogen Visualisation, ECN and MediaMonks, 2007).
